En numerosos países del hemisferio, los gobiernos han comprado o cooptado grandes cadenas de noticias, mientras periodistas y comunicadores se ven atrapados en estructuras mediáticas que responden más a intereses políticos y económicos que al deber ético de informar con verdad. Así, la prensa deja de ser un contrapeso del poder para convertirse en su vocera.
Frente a este panorama, las redes sociales han irrumpido como un espacio alternativo de expresión. Gracias a ellas, sectores antes silenciados han encontrado voz, rompiendo con décadas de exclusión mediática. Pero este nuevo escenario también trae consigo riesgos: la desinformación, la manipulación digital y los discursos de odio amenazan con distorsionar el sentido mismo de la libertad comunicacional.
Defender el pensamiento libre es, por tanto, más urgente que nunca. No basta con tener acceso a plataformas o micrófonos; se necesita una ciudadanía crítica, consciente y vigilante. La verdad no puede ser monopolio de ningún poder, ni la información un privilegio administrado por intereses particulares.
La historia demuestra que cuando se apaga la voz del pensamiento libre, también se apaga la llama de la democracia. Por eso, honrar la advertencia de Russell es una responsabilidad de todos: periodistas, medios y sociedad civil.
Solo así podremos garantizar que, dentro de cien años, la libertad siga siendo un derecho, y no un recuerdo.
